What is the Ultimate Fighting? Ultimate Fighting is currently the largest mixed martial arts[MMA] exhibition in the world. Ultimate fighting combines all the fighting/martial arts disciplines and allows the participants to compete in all ranges [kicks to punches, knees to elbows, throws/take-downs to in-close submissions] of hand to hand combat.
Promoted to the largest extent by three organizations, the Ultimate Fighing Challenge [UFC], Pride and the International Fight League [IFL], the world of mixed martial arts has grown perpetually both in popularity and within the skill demonstrated by the fighters.
Both the UFC and Pride are headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada and are owned and operated by Zuffa, LLC.
The IFL is headquartered in New York and has offices in Las Vegas.
Although only men are allowed to compete, there are many amateur promoters throughout the country that also allow women to participate.
Originally started as a tournament to find the world's best fighters, regardless of their martial arts background, and was based upon Brazilian vale tudo fighting. Over the years some rules have been implemented, however early in its inception, the UFC was known as a "no holds barred" fighting and viewed by some as contests of acute violence and brutality.
As political pressure mounted, the creation of stricter rules and sanctioning by state athletic commissions, marketers began to see the potential in revenue as the sport became seen in a more legitimate light.
Along with Pay-Per-View, mainstream cable television has also aided the sport's popularity with such televisions shows as The Ultimate Fighter.
